New Vacancy: Help us establish and co-build a future Welsh Youth Parliament

Do you want to help young people become active citizens of the future? Do you want to be involved in creating a new Welsh Youth Parliament?

I’m Mari Wyn Gooberman, Education and Youth Engagement manager and if you’re passionate about youth engagement, the National Assembly for Wales could be the place for you.

Now is the perfect opportunity to work with other professionals in the field of education, youth work, brand, media, digital and events to reach out to the young citizens of Wales. Our various learning programmes offer activities and opportunities to discuss political issues, challenge Assembly Members and participate in their work. My hope is that all secondary schools, colleges and youth organisations in Wales will encourage all their learners regardless of socio – economic background, ability and ethnicity to actively engage with the National Assembly for Wales.

Kate, Dilwyn and Ann, Education and Youth Engagement Officers sum up the outreach work:

“Being part of the Education and Youth Engagement team at the National Assembly for Wales means the freedom to be innovative and creative in how we engage with young people, and to know that what’s done in day to day work is making a positive difference to the future of Wales.”

Another way we aim to assist young people to get involved in the democratic process during 2018 is in the creation of a Welsh Youth Parliament – an elected body, led by young people for young people to ensure their voice is heard by the Assembly.

Pupil participation in decision making at a local, community or national level will, we hope, lead to a dramatic impact in increasing the confidence, motivation and aspirations of young people, whether they play a leading role as the first representatives or engage with issues raised by the Youth Parliament online or during regional youth engagement events.

I am proud to be working with my fellow Education and Youth Engagement Officers to begin to encourage as many young people as possible to engage with this ambitious new initiative. …..which is why I’m looking for a new Education and Youth Engagement Officer to join the team.

Kelly Harris, Youth Engagement Officer at the Cardiff Bay Office explains more:

“Working as part of the Education and Youth Engagement Team is a fulfilling, challenging, fast paced, and I absolutely love it. Providing opportunities for young people to learn about the Assembly, become involved in the work of the Assembly and have a say on what matters to them in a participatory manner is extremely important and I am proud to be part of a team which does this. The Welsh Youth Parliament is such an exciting project, and I can’t wait to see it develop and provide even more young people in Wales with the opportunity to have a voice in the world of ‘politics’.”

What is the role?

We’re a small but dynamic team in the Assembly and our aim is to continuously shape the Assembly’s engagement with young people; to reach, inspire, enable and inform the young people of Wales about the work of the Assembly.

We are looking for somebody who is passionate about engaging with young people face to face and online. The potential for reaching young people online, especially the disengaged using emerging new technologies plays an important part of this work. User generated content is also growing at pace so we need to facilitate this opportunity.

We want a Welsh speaking youth engagement expert to work with our current four education/ youth engagement outreach officers and one in house education officer working predominantly in our dedicated teaching facility, Siambr Hywel in Cardiff Bay.

You should be confident in working with young people in a variety of settings and be familiar with best practices approaches – this is perhaps knowledge and skills through previous experience in youth work, digital content creation and/or event planning.

If you want to innovate, be proactive and help us create a platform for young people to be able to develop their own Welsh Youth Parliament as we approach the 20th anniversary year of the Assembly then we want to hear from you so please APPLY NOW!

Closing Date: 20 February 2018, 10:00.
