It is an exciting time for children and young people living in Wales! Lesley Griffiths AM, Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty, has announced that the new Children’s Commissioner for Wales will be Professor Sally Holland PhD CQS and she will start on April 20th 2015.
Professor Sally Holland has a great background of working with children and young people in different settings, from social work to working at the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University teaching social work and childhood studies. She has an international reputation built on helping children and young people to represent their own views through participative research methods. Professor Holland is the Director and founder of CASCADE (Children’s Social Care Research Centre).
The Centre includes CASCADE Voices, which helps young people who have experienced care to look at CASCADE’s priorities. She also has a strong reputation for her writing, research and public speaking about children’s issues. Her areas of knowledge include children’s rights, Welsh children’s views about citizenship and identity, looked after children, child protection and adoption. She has also campaigned for and researched the needs and rights of children.
We look forward to Professor Holland starting her new role and seeing what she does to help improve the lives for children and young people living in Wales!
